How the Marketplace & Quick Commerce P&L Calculator works
Tick the platforms you sell on and enter one month of each platform's sales, orders, commission, returns, fees and ad spend. The calculator builds a P&L for every platform and for all of them together, down to CM 2, with ROAS on platform ads and AOV for each platform.
- Net sales
- Gross sales minus returns (a % of each platform's sales), minus the GST in the sales kept.
- Gross margin
- Net sales minus COGS. COGS is a % of sales, with the GST on expenses taken out.
- CM 1
- Gross margin minus commission (a % of sales, with the GST on expenses taken out), and fulfilment, shipping and storage fees (each a fee per order × orders).
- CM 2
- CM 1 minus ad spend on the platform.
- ROAS on platform ads
- Gross sales ÷ ad spend on the platform.
Frequently asked questions
Why track each marketplace and quick commerce platform separately?
Each platform charges its own commission and fees and runs its own ads, so the same sales can leave very different margins. A P&L for each platform shows which ones make money after their own costs.
What is CM 2 for a marketplace or quick commerce platform?
CM 2 is what a platform leaves after COGS, commission, fulfilment and shipping, storage and the ads you run on it. Salary, rent and other overheads are not taken off, because they are shared across channels. In the example, Amazon's ₹6,00,000 of sales leaves ₹86,229 of CM 2, 18.4% of its net sales.
How is ROAS on platform ads calculated?
Gross sales on the platform ÷ ad spend on that platform. In the example, Amazon's ₹6,00,000 of sales against ₹70,000 of Amazon ad spend gives a ROAS of 8.57x.
Should I enter fees and ad spend with or without GST?
Without GST, like every cost in the calculator. Only sales are entered including GST.
Which costs go into a marketplace P&L?
COGS, the platform's commission, fulfilment and shipping fees, storage fees, returns and ad spend on the platform. Commission and returns are entered as a % of that platform's sales, fulfilment, shipping and storage fees per order, and ad spend as the amount for the month.
